🌸Requirements to receive the relocation assistance grant from the Japanese government
People who meet the following requirements may be eligible to receive assistance from the Japanese government.
If a person working or living in the 23 wards of Tokyo moves outside of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, or Kanagawa Prefectures.
If a person working or living in the 23 wards of Tokyo starts a business outside of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, or Kanagawa Prefectures.
💲About the amount of the relocation assistance of Japan
If a household (e.g. you and your spouse) emigrates together, you can receive up to 1,000,000 yen.
If a family (e.g. you, your spouse and a 17 year old child) emigrates with a family member under 18 years old, they will receive additional maximum of 1 million yen for each person who is under 18 years old. So, in this case, the maximum is 2 million yen.
If you are single (you only), you will receive a maximum of 600,000 yen.
The reason of relocation assistance of Japan
In Japan, where the population is declining, rural areas are depopulating. In order to prevent this depopulation, the government is promoting migration from Tokyo to rural areas.
If you wish to take advantage of this relocation assistance of Japan, you must meet all of the following conditions
(1) You live in one of the 23 wards of Tokyo (Minato ward, Chuo ward, Edogawa ward, etc.)
You commute to the 23 wards of Tokyo from Saitama, Chiba, or Kanagawa prefectures.
You have fulfilled the conditions in (1) for a total of at least 5 years in the past 10 years.
And you have fulfilled the conditions in (1) within the last one year.
And, if you are an employee, you have joined the employment insurance system.
(2) You are moving to an area where depopulation is likely to increase, such as outside of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, or Kanagawa Prefectures.
Then, you apply for the grant within 3 months to 1 year after your move.
Then, you must intend to continuously reside in the municipality to which you move for at least 5 years after the application.
(3) You must find a job at a small or medium-sized company in the municipality to which you are moving (a job listed on the matching website).
You must be willing to continue working for your current employer remotely to continue working at your current job.
If you are currently working for Rakuten, you can continue to work for Rakuten from your home in your new location.
Or, you can start your own business in your new location.
Areas outside of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, etc. where depopulation is likely to increase include rural areas within Tokyo (e.g., Okutama Town). (e.g. Okutama town, etc.)
You are not entitled to use this relocation assistance no matter which town or village you move to.
Many towns and villages offer this relocation assistance, but you need to check with each town or village for detailed conditions.
Examples of the relocation assistance grant
You have lived in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo for more than 5 years until now.
Your workplace is Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo.
You have decided to move to Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, because of the relocation assistance grant.
Your family consists of you, your spouse, and a 17-year-old child, so the amount of relocation assistance grant is 1.3 million yen.
You intend to reside in Tochigi City for at least the next five years.
And after you move to Tochigi city, you will telework by your own will for your current employer’s company.
If you move out of Tochigi City within 3 years of moving Tochigi city, or if you received the relocation assistance grant by submitting a false application, you are obliged to return the full amount of the relocation assistance grant you received.
If you move out of Tochigi City within 4 to 5 years, you are obliged to return half of the relocation assistance grant you received.
