How to start a business ? A President’s Approach

What’s important to starting a business in Japan ?

One Japanese President’s Approach

Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to a speech by a Japanese president. He is involved in a variety of businesses and earns 5,000,000,000 yen in annual sales.

It is difficult to actually implement his way of thinking, but I will write it down anyway.

Suppose you want to start some business. What is important for that is not what you know about laws and taxes. You can leave that kind of paperwork to others.

To start a business, it is important to be “selective and focused”.

You already have some knowledge and experience. You just don’t realize it, though.

Whether you make 1,000 yen a month or 1,000,000 yen a month, there is basically no difference in what you do.
The only difference is the scale.

When you start a business, you say you are serious.

But what do you mean by “serious”?

It’s about focusing your precious time and money where you choose to focus it, where it will general profit as a business.

People who are getting good results in business have a bias.

People who are unusually interested and knowledgeable only in one area are more likely to succeed in business.
(even if it is to make a Origami, a kind of paper folding)

If you have the time to read the newspaper and acquire general knowledge every day , you should focus on one area and become an expert in that field, realm.

If you are going to be an expert on an realm, it is absurd to spend time trying to know name of prime minister of Japan.

You don’t have to think about balance. Focus your resources of time and money on one thing.

You can learn general knowledge in your spare time afterwards in the future.

You have a family and you need to take care of them. So I’m not saying “you should sacrifice or neglect your family.”

I mean that you should clarify what you mean by “take care of your family” and act accordingly.

But you can’t take on a new challenge without sacrificing something.

You would have gone home from work at 9pm and spent your time watching youtube. And at 24:00 you would have gone to the bed.

On weekends you spend time with your family. During the train ride, you would watch Yahoo News.

If you decided to start a new business, you would eliminate the time for watching youtube and Yahoo News.

You would not be in the mood to work some days. To avoid this, you fill your schedule in advance.

You set deadlines for everything you do.

Do what you want to do after you’ve taken care of what you planned to do.

But I think you don’t want to live your life like this way.

But for the first few years of your business, you have no choice. After that, hiring and organizing people will give you more time.

It’s hard to resist the temptation to play games on your phone. If that’s the case, get someone close to you to monitor you. If you have games installed on your phone, ask them to delete them in advance.

Even if your business is doing a little well, don’t start another one right away.

Start with the first choice and get it going and get it organized before you start the next one.

You are precious to read a statement like this.

But you may say, “I don’t have the knowledge or experience to make a business out of it”.

But you already have the knowledge and experience you need. But,  you just don’t realize it yet.

I will write more about this later.
