Permanent resident and departure from Japan

If you are a permanent resident and want to leave Japan for a while, you need to apply for a special re-entry permit(みなし再入国許可) or a re-entry permit(再入国許可).

If you plan to return to Japan within a year, you need to apply for a special re-entry permit before you leave.
If you fail to apply for a special re-entry permit and leave Japan, you will lose your permanent residency, so please be careful.
Also, if you do not return to Japan within a year (or within two years for special permanent residents) after getting a special re-entry permit, you will lose your permanent residency.

If you expect to leave Japan for more than a year, such as for a long-term overseas assignment, you need to get a re-entry permit (Not a special re-entry permit) in Japan beforehand.

To get a re-entry permit (Not a special re-entry permit), you need to apply at the immigration office in Japan before you leave.

If you leave Japan without getting a re-entry permit, you will also lose your permanent residency. And the period of the re-entry permit is either five years or the remaining period of your current visa, whichever is shorter, and if you do not return to Japan within five years, you will lose your permanent residency.

So, if you follow the above procedures, you can keep your permanent residency.
